Choral Program

The 2015 Summer Academy Choral Program runs from August 1-8 at the Victoria Conservatory of Music – We hope you will join us for this fantastic week of singing!

There are so many reasons why you’ll love your week with us:

Beautiful Music!

Our 2015 program includes some of the greatest works of choral music, ranging from Renaissance music such as Byrd’s Non Nobis Domine and Josquin’s beautiful Mille Regretz, to Mendelssohn’s touching Drei geistliche Lieder (will you audition for a solo?) to beautiful modern works such as the Laudate by Knut Nystedt, Ola Gjelo’s haunting The Ground, and Dirait-on by Morten Lauridsen (hear the composer himself accompanying the choir on this recording of Dirait-on with the European Chamber Choir).

New Faculty for 2015!

This year we are thrilled to announce that award-winning Vancouver conductor Morna Edmundson will be joining us this summer. A longtime singer in the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Morna is now much in demand as a leader of many of BC’s top choirs, including the celebrated Elektra Women’s Choir. Morna will be conducting a number of the chamber choirs and will lead us in now fewer than three workshops. Don’t miss this great chance to work with Morna right here in Victoria!

We are also so happy to be welcoming back Willi Zwozdesky to our visiting faculty again this summer. Willi charmed us all in 2013 with his superb ear, great sense of humour, and his uncanny ability to conjure up the ‘little people’ (overtones) through his innovative work with our choirs. Join us to make the most of this rare visit to the Island of this much-lauded musician, currently director of the Vancouver Men’s Chorus and Executive Director of the BC Choral Federation.

Willi and Morna are joining our Artistic Directors Kathryn Whitney & Brian Wismath, and our pianist David Stratkauskas for what promises to be a hugely memorable week of choral singing in Victoria.

New Course Content for 2015!

There are many changes to our course content and timetable this year to keep the course fresh and new, including:

*even more chamber choirs for more intense work in smaller groups;
*multiple conductors per chamber choir to give you a broader experience;
*more workshops on new topics, including Kodaly for sight-singing, singing contemporary choral music, diction, and choral blend;
*choral techniques sessions for women’s voices (led by Morna) and Men’s voices (led by Willi);
*a tighter timetable with later start and earlier finish times to make our time together more efficient;
*a ‘Speed Readers’ group to challenge advanced singers, with the chance to perform some sight-read works from the sessions during the week;
*new versions of the WUMS (Warm-up Morning Sing) and BOSS (Break-out Sight Singing) sessions to lubricate your voice and sharpen your ears;
*Great opportunities for fun between sessions, including lunch-time concerts, a staff-student variety show, and group outings in the city of Victoria;

*Course open to singers aged 16 and up – a great opportunity to sing across the generations!
